Field Trips during the summer

I know that many of you travel during the summer but I figured that it might be good for our kids to still have some play time together and do some fun filled field trips during this time.

I would like to know if there is any interest in doing a summer time field trip with Ms. Veronica Gordon to learn about our local bush and it's applications in health, cooking, gardening, etc.  If you think you would be interested in this, please email me and let me know. I am thinking late July, early August.

Also, it might be a good time to set up a hike to Maroon Ridge or there abouts with Olasee Davis. So again, if you are interested let me know.  Maybe a Full Moon hike to Jacks and Issacs too? What are your thoughts?

  1. I'm so glad to have found your blog. We are a homeschool family hoping to relocate. We've been considering for years but now the house is rented out and we're getting more serious. We're actively applying for jobs. My husbands degree us distribution and logistics, so he's hoping to find something as warehouse manager, production supervisor, etc. it's exciting to know there's other homeschoolers.... We're crossing our fingers.

    1. Hi Nicole!
So glad you found the site and WELCOME to St. Croix! Hope your hubby can find a job that he likes and that we get to meet you and your family soon. The group that meets at PE Day has anywhere from 20 - 60 kids at a time, and there are many others on St. Croix that just don't come to the PE Days. Looking forward to meeting you!

    2. Nicole:

Have your husband call Charlene Hiddleston 402-541-8180. She recently moved off island, but this is the same job she did on island; she can likely be a good resource for him.

Alex- I like the idea of learning about the local bush! - Karen Franse

    3. Karen - I will work on this and others for sometime in July. Glad I'm not the only one wanting to learn about bush!

  2. Wow, thanks for the info above, I will have him call if this other job doesn't work out. Looks like this job will be mostly on Thomas, only once or twice a week to croix (company paid). However, I think I'm leaning toward living on John instead of Thomas, since he won't be on Croix as much. Any homeschool groups on stj or stt? It's really hard to find information online. Thanks again for all the help. ( I have a boy started kindergarten, and a girl in 2nd grade)

  3. Hi Nicole,
I know there are homeschool groups on both STT and STJ, and i have been trying to get in contact with them, but to no success yet. Once I find them, I will post them here. If you ever want to do any of our field trips here, just let me know and we can probably get someone to pick you up from the Sea Plane or Airport.
I don't blame you about living on St. John, it IS beautiful, but I know it's more expensive than St. Croix. We love to vacation there. Maybe one day we will get back over there and get to meet you in person :)

  4. Hi! It's Nicole again! Hope you don't mind me writing you again. The job my husband was interviewing for didn't work out, they decided not to replace the guy that left. I tried to send an email to Charlene (from the above post) on facebook but heard no response.

HOWEVER, he JUST applied for a position with the VI Department of Education that he is EXACTLY qualified for. It's on St Croix, and I am just so excited and keeping my fingers crossed.

Does anyone know anyone with Dept of Ed, or Human Resources? Contact Names associated with this position are Nicole Jacobs and Dayna Clendinen - I'm not sure if they are out of St Thomas or Croix.

Would LOVE this as Croix is cheaper and obviously has a lot of nice, homeschooling families.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Nicole,
You can write in any time you want!
I am not sure what to tell you about Charlene, but I can ask around if you want. With the Department of Ed, if he could walk into the office and talk to the person in charge he might have a great chance of getting the job. I am not sure if you all can do that though. I will ask around and see if anyone in the group we are associated with know either of those two ladies and see what info I can get you.
As for St. Croix being better, well..... seeing as I live here, I agree, but I know there are some great homeschooling families on St. Thomas and St. John as well.
